“I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel….then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” excerpts of Philippians 1 and 2
Campus unity has been something I have been for from when I was a student till now even today. Shoot I even attended campus unity events when I was in high school. This past couple of weeks have really been kinda messy and heart breaking. The Genocide Awareness Project has me so nervous and somewhat troubled about the campus ministries. Sure I am absolutely pro-life, there is no shame in that. There is just something so controversial and tense about the way things are “going down” with this pro-life protest/spectacle/art show whatever you want to call it. There have been tense times in the united campus ministries and I just pray that it doesn’t continue. The GAP is sure to cause quite the stir and controversy on campus, the scary part is when they pack up and leave, what happens? The potential for the scene to be volatile is extremely high and this could easily blow up the campus in a lot of ways. The greatest action the ministries can take is not to yell or join in the controversy but to pray, and love with gentleness and respect. The opportunity is huge for great moves by God, when an opportunity is huge though it means it can go one of two ways… The campus is in a really strange place spiritually. Sure the university wants to pursue more spiritual aspects on one hand but at the same time is scared to offend any one.
Two days ago I had the opportunity to stop by a heartbreaking protest for equal rights. This fight for equal rights was not for women’s rights, minority rights, disability rights, it was for gender rights. Gender rights not being only those of male and female but also sexual orientation whether it be homosexual, bisexual, lesbian, or transgender. One day later the university is already working on campus legislation for all of the campus organizations to have to add into their constitution a clause for equal treatment of homosexuals, lesbians, transgender, etc. This rule includes such details as referring to students in whatever pronoun they prefer. This addition to the FSU constitution hits close to home for us as we welcome, love and reach out with God’s love to anyone beyond “gender.”
This environment of possible division among the ministries must be prayed against and the ministry need to unite and unite fast. This next week may very well be a great week to unite around two causes, pro-life and standing for a what my ultimate standard, the bible says.
I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
